Snail Mail Is SAFE

Jimmy Carter uses ‘snail-mail’ to thwart NSA
Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter
Hello, everybody. You’re listening to Let’s Master English, and my name is Coach Shane.
How is it going everybody? Thank you for downloading and listening to my podcast. It’s Let’s Master English 19, already the 19th episode. For me, it is March 24th lunch time. I had a late start today. I was looking for a good news story, but oh man the past week, most of the news stories have been very depressing. So, I eventually found something. So enough chit-chat, let’s begin.
Everyone’s probably aware by now that the US can tap into pretty much everything you do. And that goes for everyone who uses any form of electronic communications. Even former president Carter expressed his disdain for the NSA’s abuse. If you don’t wanna be spied on, you have two choices: go incommunicado, or like president Carter use snail mail.
Oh, boy. Today was a little bit long, some difficult words. Let’s me read it again.
All right, so lots of vocabulary words that we need to understand. The story is pretty simple. But once again, if you don’t know the vocabulary, it’s tough. So let’s go back to the first sentence.
Everyone’s probably aware by now that the US can tap into pretty much everything you do.
So everyone is probably aware, I’m sure that everybody knows, everybody is knowledgeable. To be aware means to know, to be knowledgeable about something. Everyone’s probably aware by now. By now, at this point, it’s March 24th, 2014. Everyone probably know that the US can tap into pretty much everything you do. Tap into, this is a phrasal verb. T-A-P I-N-T-O. To tap into means to spy on, S-P-Y, to spy on something, to get something, to get information secretly. And this expression comes from phone lines. When somebody would cut the wires and add another wires, so that they could hear the phone conversation. So tap into mean to spy on. So the first sentence’s not too bad. Everyone probably aware by now that the US can tap into pretty much everything you do. Pretty much means basically, essentially. So, whatever you’re doing, the US can probably spy on you. But, everybody knows that. The next sentence,
And that goes for everyone who uses any form of electronic communications.
And that goes, the ability of the United States to spy on you applies to everyone. And that goes for everyone. The United States’ ability to spy on you applies to everyone who uses any form of electronic communications. So if you use the telephone, which uses electricity. If you use the cellphone, that’s electronic. If you use Twitter, a computer, any type, any form of electronic communications, the US can spy on you. Next sentence,
Even former president Carter expressed his disdain for the NSA’s abuse.
So even, also former president Carter. In America, back in the 70s, 1976 to 1980, we had a president named Jimmy Carter. And Jimmy Carter is famous these days for trying to bring peace throughout the world. So we say former president Carter. Former means previous. Now don’t be confused with ex. If I said ex-president Carter, then the [??] is he was fired, or he was taken out of office. So when we say ex, it has kind of a negative meaning to it, a negative feel to it. So, let’s say you were married, but then you got a divorce. Would you say your former wife or your ex-wife. I think 99.99999 percent of people would say ex-wife because the probably don’t like her. But, let’s say you were married. And your wife died. Would you say your ex-wife or your former wife. Yeah, you would say your former wife in that case. So former has a, a much nicer meaning then ex. OK? They both means previous. Ex is negative, former has a positive comentation. So even former president Carter expressed his disdain. Expressed, told everyone, described, talked a bout his disdain. What is disdain? D-I-S-D-A-I-N, anger, scorn. Even president Carter talked about his anger for about. If we say anger, we should say about. If we say disdain, we say for the NSA’s abuse. The NSA, the national security agency. It’s a huge spy agency in America like the CIA. But they, the NSA focuses on information. CIA, you could think they focus on people. OK. The NSA’s abuse. Abuse means the improper, or unjust use of something or someone. So physical abuse would be to physically harm someone. That’s not nice. That’s unjust. OK? The NSA is taking people’s personal information without permission, without reason. So that is improper or unjust. And president Carter, this week, talked about his disgust for the NSA’s abuse. The next sentence, the last sentence.
If you don’t wanna be spied on, you have two choices: go incommunicado, or like president Carter use snail mail.
If you don’t wanna be spied on, you have two choices. So, if you do not want the NSA, the United States government to spy on you, you have two choices. Oh good. So what are the choices? Number 1, go incommunicado. Oh that’s a big word. Incommunicato, I-N-C-O-M-M-U-N-I-C-A-D-O. One more time, I-N-C-O-M-M-U-N-I-C-A-D-O. To go incommunicado means to have no communication with anyone. Live in the mountains, live in the desert, live in the forest, no communication. If you have. If you are incommunicado, then the NSA will haven’t difficult time spying on you. So the first choices: go incommunicado, or the second choice: like president Cartor. Oh, this is what president Cartor does, use snail mail. Snail mail, S-N-A-I-L, a snail. A snail is a type of animal. Can we call it an animal? You know, it’s really slimy. It lives in a shell, and it moves very slowly. Snail, S-N-A-I-L. Snail mail. M-A-I-L. Snail mail, two words, what is snail mail? Well, you know, a piece of paper, a pen you write a letter, you put it in an envelope. And then on the envelope, you put a stamp on it, and send it to the post office. So snail mail is using the post office. Nowadays, most people use email which is electronic mail, and PUM! In an instant, your message can go anywhere in the world. But, that is electronic, and the NSA can see it. So, president Carter doesn’t like that. He prefer to use snail mail when he want to send something private. Oh, that’s the story. All right. So we had a bunch of words. Let me go over the words again.
-      to be aware(nhận thấy, nhận thức thấy) to be aware mean to be knowledgeable of something
-      by now(tại thời điểm bây giờ) by now, at this point
-      to tap into(theo dõi, do thám) it means to spy on, to get some information secretly.
-      pretty much: (hầu hết, về cơ bản) pretty much means basically, essentially
-      form(dạng, hình thức) type
-      former(trước, cũ, người trước) previous. And don’t be confused with ex. Ex and former, while they both mean previous, former is positive, ex is negative. That’s easy to remember.
-      expressed(bày tỏ, thể hiện) he expressed, he told everyone, he described something, he talked about something.
-      disdain(sự khinh bỉ) anger, scorn, disgust
-      NSA(Cơ quan an ninh quốc gia Hoa Kỳ) the NSA, the National Security Agency. This is a spy organization in America that collect information on everyone at everything.
-      abuse(sự lạm dụng) the improper or unjust use of something or someone.
-      Incommunicado(biệt lập, không liên lạc) to have no communication with anyone.
-      Snail mail(hình thức gửi thư truyền thống qua bưu điện bằng phong bì và tem) You using the post office. You need a piece of paper, a pen, an envelope and a stamp. And then you send your letter in the mail at the post office that is snail mail. Because it goes very slow like a snail.
OK. Let me read the story two more times: the first time, very nice and easily, the second time, more normal. OK? Here we go.
